Teaching Support
Course Reserves
Placing books and articles on reserve ensures that your students will have access to materials you deem important. Scanned or digital material can be placed on electronic reserve and made accessible by password via the Web. For reserve articles, the Library encourages the use of electronic reserves, since it provides 24 hour access for students. However, the Library still makes traditional reserves available for those faculty who prefer it. For details and instructions, visit:

Library Instruction: Workshops and Tours
Librarian-conducted instruction can improve student research. Sessions are conducted in Library computer classrooms and usually cover library services, the MountainLynx catalog, electronic databases, and web resources. Sessions can be tailored specifically to the needs of each class and/or instructor. Librarians also offer tours of library facilities upon request. Contact information for requesting instruction is on the Web at:

Distance Education Services
The Library strives to give distance education students and faculty the same access to Library services that on-campus students/faculty receive. Distance students and faculty may have up to 30 articles sent to their home, free of charge, per semester. The Library will pay to send (and have returned) 10 books per semester, free of charge.

Embedded Librarians
If you are teaching an eCampus class, consider “embedding” a librarian in your class. Embedded librarians give students in the class access to research assistance that they might otherwise miss. Within the eCampus course, librarians can provide information about library services, give assistance with specific research projects, and offer advice on research topics and bibliographies.

Suggesting New Books
To suggest a book purchase, contact the librarian who handles that subject specialty. A list of librarians and their subject specialties is on the web at:

Media Services
The Libraries offer an extensive video/DVD collection. Materials may be checked out, screened in our viewing rooms, or placed on reserve for your students to view individually. In addition, streaming videos, purchased with copyright clearance, can be accessed through the Web. Current collections include classic PBS and BBC documentaries.

Term Paper Clinic
The Downtown Campus Library offers individualized assistance to undergraduate students through a drop-in term paper clinic held daily, Monday through Friday (1:30 – 3:30) in room 1028 and on Tuesdays and Thursdays (1:00 – 3:00) at the Evansdale Library in room 212. The Clinic is offered during the fall and spring semesters. Students can get help choosing a focused research topic, formulating a research strategy, using Library databases and resources, organizing information into a structured research essay, and documenting and citing sources correctly. Please note we do not provide proofreading. For students who need help with the mechanics of writing, please refer them to the WVU Writing Center
(293-3107 ext. 33457).
